Question of the month
What is insulin resistance?
Insulin is produced in the pancreas and is responsible for transporting sugar in the blood (blood sugar) to cells. Insulin then acts like a key, opening cell doors allowing the sugar to enter. When someone has insulin resistance, cells do not allow insulin to unlock their doors. Insulin resistance is progressive, rather than immediate. In the beginning, the pancreas will produce more insulin, enough to force sugar into cells and allow for a normal blood sugar. However, as time progresses, the blood sugar may eventually rise which is when a doctor may tell someone that they have pre-diabetes. If changes are not made, pre-diabetes may turn into diabetes.
